On 20 January 2020 the newly established Data Standardisation and Modelling Workgroup (Arbeitsgruppe Datenstandardisierung und -modellierung, ADSM) within the Society for Anthropology (Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, GfA) met for the first time in Freiburg (Germany). Here, the scope and aims of the group were defined and a number of activities initiated. The meeting also saw the formal foundation of the ADSM.
In the run-up to the meeting, GfA members and other interested individuals were asked to submit their ideas and suggestions for the new workgroup through a structured online form. All submissions were digested into a concept paper that set the frame for the meeting agenda. The concept paper consisted of numbered items that could be accepted, rejected or modified by the meeting participants.
In order to facilitate participation for individuals living a a large distance from Freiburg the meeting was broadcast via video stream. Remote participants could follow the discussion life and contribute through a chat system or via email.
The ADSM was founded with well-defined scope and aims. A number of task groups were formed to develop regularly updated resources and medium-term projects. Formal rules of procedure were not adopted. Felix Engel (Freiburg) and Toralf Kirsten (Mittweida) were elected as workgroup speakers.

On 26 September 2019 the members assembly of the Society for Anthropology (Gesellschaft für Anthropologie, GfA) decided that a workgroup on data standardisation and modelling should be formed. During an informal meeting on 27 September 2019 among society members interested in joining the group it was decided that a constituting meeting should be held early in 2020. GfA members can obtain a report on this meeting from the internal section of the GfA website.
